Microgestin FE is a combination of two drugs, Ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone. This combination of drugs contains female hormones which ultimately prevent ovulation in women. This medication is used to prevent pregnancy. It prevents pregnancy and ovulation as it makes your cervical mucus and uterine lining which results in making it harder for the sperm to reach the uterus and even harder for an egg which is attached to the uterus. It makes the vaginal fluid thicker and prevents women impregnation by stopping the sperm from reaching the egg and causing reproduction.
Warning; do not use this medication if you are pregnant or recently had a baby. There are restrictions in using every medication. In this case, you aren’t supposed to have this medication if you are using any other birth control medications.
Other than preventing chances of pregnancy in women this medication also helps to make your periods more regular and cyclic, it decreases blood loss, decrease the risk of ovarian cysts in your body as well as treats acne.
On the other hand, using this medication will not secure anyone from any sexually transmitted diseases which includes, HIV, gonorrhea and chlamydia)

- High blood pressure
- Cardiac problems
- Blood-clotting problem
- Circulation disorder
- Unusual vaginal bleeding (this does not include menstruation)
- Liver disease or liver cancer
- Migraine or intense headaches
- Breast or urine cancer
- Jaundice if you have recently given birth
- Any recent stroke or seizure
- Any blood clot or blood issue
- Cardiac arrest/ heart attack
- High cholesterol or bad cholesterol
- Seizures of epilepsy
The intake of this medication may get mixed with the milk you feed to the baby and will be transmitted to the baby through the milk. It is strictly told not to use this medication if you are breastfeeding a baby. Smoking whilst taking these medications can cause severe issues and might increase the risk of your blood clots or the chances of stroke or heart attacks.
How To Use This Medication?
It is important for the patient to read the leaflet in the medicine before starting to use it. It is strictly said to consult your doctor as well as your pharmacist before using this medication. Make sure you aren’t pregnant or breastfeeding. Ask your doctor thoroughly about the consequences of the pills and what you should do if you miss a dose or two.
This medication is prescribed to be taken orally i.e. from mouth. The dose of this medicine is usually once a day but this is not mandatory. The concerned doctor will inform you the amount of usage of this drug. It is prescribed once daily and it is important to take the medicine at the same time every day that would be after each 24 hours.
The time of the day which is evening or night or even morning is not important but it is important to remember to take the pill everyday exactly after 24 hours. If your medication is finished and you are opening a new pack, start the pack late or at a different time of the day. consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any queries.
The pack of pills contains 21 pills that are the active pills and 7 inactive pills (with iron – reminder pills). Start by taking one pill every day for 21 days and then start by the 7 inactive pills without any gap. You should be menstruating in the fourth week of your packet but if you don’t, you should consult your doctor.
In case you are also taking any other medications along with this which have iron in it for instance, levothyroxine, penicllamine, tetracycline or quinolones, consult your doctor if you should continue taking the reminder pills or you should put them to waste. Iron can reduced the effect that microgestin have on your body.
Side Effects of Microgestin
Every medication has its side effects, some are minor and some are major. This medication has some side effects we well. These side effects include;
- Sudden feeling of weakness or numbness
- Chest pain, blood in cloth
- Warmth in one or both legs
- Symptoms of heart attack or cardiac arrest
- Nausea or feeling of vomiting
- Intense sweating
- Blurry vision
- Severe headache or migraine
- Swelling of feet or ankles
Other Common Side Effects May Include
- Breast swelling
- Skin irritation
- Nausea/ vomiting
- Freckles or wrinkles
- Changes of weight
- Loss of appetite
- Vision change
- Vaginal itching and unusual discharge
- Decreased sex drive
- Changes in menstrual patterns
- Severe stomach pain
- Trouble in speaking or understanding
There are some issues with how you intake these medications. When such medications are taken alongside other medications, there can be unusual and unfavorable chemical reactions to it. There are some dos and don’ts of every medication.
Note that if you feel any of the above symptoms whilst using this particular medication, either call 911 for emergency or consult your doctor as soon as possible.
It is said not to use this medication is you are above 35 and a smoker. Smoking can cause changes in the actual effects of the medication.
There has been a misunderstanding that birth control pills protect one from sexually transmitted diseases but this is not true. Microgestin do not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases, only condoms can help you with that.
Make sure to have the prescription of the medication before using the medicine. Consult your doctor and keep in touch with the pharmacist. Do not forget to inform your doctors about any other medications that you are taking alongside. They might have a negative chemical reaction with microgestin.
Notes to Take
If you miss one active pill of the medication, take 2 pills on the next day and continue the normal dose from the next day.
If you miss two active pills within the period of week 1 or week 2, take two pills each day for the next two days and continue the normal dose from the next day.
If you miss two active pills in the third week of your medication, simply throw out the packet and start a new packet and count it as day one on your calendar.
If you are not taking your pills regularly and you still miss your period, consult your doctor since you might actually be pregnant. Take notes on your menstruation dates and keep track to buy star wars.
