Treatments for Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction

One of the most common struggles for men as they age is erectile dysfunction. According to statistics, erectile dysfunction is prevalent especially to men who reach 40 years old and beyond. 10 percent of men are affected per decade of life by mild and moderate erectile dysfunction.

For some, erectile dysfunction is not something they should worry about, but for most of these affected men, the effects of erectile dysfunction cause them to lose self-confidence, become more stressed and have relationship problems.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to sustain an erection enough to have sexual intercourse. It is a very common condition, however, men find it challenging to talk about this situation.

Although it is common and can be considered as a sign of old age, it can also be a symptom of an underlying serious health condition. It can even be a sign of heart conditions since it has similar symptoms with erectile dysfunction.

The process of having an erection consists of processes from the brain, hormones, emotions, nerves, muscles, and blood circulation. Any problem or interference on their processes can cause erectile dysfunction.

Different factors can cause erectile dysfunction. It can be physical or psychological factors, but it can also be a combination of both physical and psychological issues.

Here are some of the physical causes of erectile dysfunction:

  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Atherosclerosis or Clogged blood vessels
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Tobacco Use
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Alcoholism
  • Sleep disorders
  • Some prescription medications
  • Treatments for prostate cancer
  • Low Testerone

As the brain plays an important role in having an erection such as triggering sexual excitement, when a certain issue affects the function of our brains, it can cause erectile dysfunction. Some of these psychological issues are:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Stress

There are different ways of treating erectile dysfunction. The first thing you need to do is to talk to a urologist and have a check-up with him or her. You may choose the treatment from the following:

  • Oral and Injectable medications

Different medications have been developed to treat erectile dysfunction. You can easily shop for tablets. However, you may or may not need a prescription for these different types of medications.

  • Hormone Replacement Therapy

This is needed when the main cause of the experienced erectile dysfunction is low testosterone. This can be done through the application of the topical gel, transdermal or skin patch, injections, long-acting injectable pellets, and buccal testosterone which is applied to the cheek and gum to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

  • Penile Implant

Penile Implant or prosthesis is considered by urologists to be the most effective treatment for erectile dysfunction. It is available in two types: a hydraulic, inflatable implant, and a semi-rigid penile prosthesis.

It can be extremely difficult for men to ask for help with this kind of problem. Although some choose not to address it at all, most take the extra mile of getting help since lack of confidence, embarrassment, and added relationship problems are some things they would rather not go through. For some men, the treatment that works for them can be as simple as choosing a healthier lifestyle and pairing it with a personalized treatment program.
