There are lots of reasons why people choose to study engineering. Not only are the fastest-growing occupations in engineering, but engineers can also earn some of the largest average salaries amongst those holding bachelor’s degrees. 

However, unfortunately, over the last few years, we have seen a decrease in the number of people choosing to start a bachelor’s degree in engineering. But why is this? Research has shown that one of the main reasons people choose not to study for a degree in engineering is because they worry that there are very few job opportunities available for them once they have qualified. Another type of career that is popular with engineering graduates is consultancy. Consultants are external professionals who are contacted by companies to help them to solve problems. One of the main attractions of becoming a consultant is that the work varies a lot, meaning you will never get bored. You get to go into a range of organizations, find out how they work, offer them some solutions to their problems, and then move on to a new challenge.

3. A Career in Business

Lots of people are under the impression that, to become a CEO, you need to have a business degree, but this is not always the case. While many CEOs have earned a business degree, almost as many have earned a degree in engineering. 

But why do engineering graduates make great CEOs? There are lots of reasons why engineering graduates make great CEOs. Not only have most engineering graduates developed strong project-planning skills, but they are also great communicators. As well as this, they also know how to work as part of a team. Thanks to this, they make great business leaders. 

4. Law

Although you may think that you need a law degree to work in law, this is not true. Most law firms do not have a specific preference for law graduates. In fact, many law firms claim that most of their employees have qualifications in other areas. The practical attitude and logical mind of engineering graduates are extremely beneficial traits of a trainee solicitor

5. Technical Writing

Another career that you may not expect engineering graduates to go into is technical writing. However, if you are an engineering graduate who has a knack for writing, then this might be the perfect option for you. Technical writers work on textbooks, instruction manuals, product catalogs, and journal articles. In fact, they can work on anything where technical information needs to be communicated. 

Many high school students wonder whether they should study engineering. Even some current engineering students wonder whether it is the right career choice for them. However, there are lots of advantages to gaining a degree in engineering. Not only does studying engineering bring with it prestige, but it can also set you up for financial security.
